It's coming…（so）…／behind is…. ① Big upcoming event ② There is… right behind (location).
注意 / Note：Meaning ① 試験を控えて（about to take exam）; meaning ② 山を背に控えた町（town with its back against the mountain）.
比較 / Compare：〜を控えて（upcoming event）／〜に控えて（has… in the back, position）.
よく出る形 / Common form：名＋を／に控えて。Frequent: 試験を控えて・開幕を目前に控えて.
入学試験を控えて、彼は毎日必死に勉強している。
When the school entrance exam was coming up, he studied like crazy every day.
その旅館は背後に山を控えた静かな場所にある。
That inn is located in a quiet place, leaning against the mountain behind.
開幕を目前に控えて、選手たちの表情が引き締まった。
As opening day approaches, the players' faces tense up.
