Eventually it got to the point where... (bad ending). The bad situation persists, eventually leading to a bad outcome.
注意 / Note：Always a bad outcome; There is usually a reason before that. Or go with ついに・とうとう. Voice of criticism and complaint.
比較 / Compare：〜に至って（to the extreme new…）／〜に至っては（to give the most extreme example）／〜に至っても（even to that extent）.
よく出る形 / Common form：名／動辞書形＋に至って(は)／に至っても.
おいは遊んでばかりで、とうとう会社を辞めてしまう始末だ。
The nephew just played, eventually to the point of quitting work.
