I thought... who would have thought.... Prediction completely wrong, unexpected results.

比較 / Compare：〜と思いきや（predict complete failure, surprise）／〜と思ったら（only states what happened immediately after）.

よく出る形 / Common form：普通形＋と思いきや＋（意外な結果）.

難しいと思いきや、意外に簡単に解けた。

I thought it would be difficult, but it was surprisingly easy to solve.

もう帰ったと思いきや、彼はまだ会議室にいた。

I thought he had returned, but it turned out he was still in the meeting room.
