The funeral company "Kimpodo" (Tokyo) broadcasted a TV commercial that misled consumers about family funeral costs. In response, the Consumer Affairs Agency issued an administrative order on September 18 to prevent recurrence, citing a violation of the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations.
The company operates and provides family funeral services under the brand name "Chiisana Mori no Ie" in Tokyo and four other prefectures.
According to the Consumer Affairs Agency's announcement, from March to May 2025, the company displayed "Family Funeral from 104,500 yen~" following the text "1 group per day, private hall" in its TV commercial. However, in reality, the lowest price for a funeral using the hall was 308,000 yen.
The plan available for around 100,000 yen was actually a "direct cremation" (chokusou) format, which only involves cremation without holding a wake or a funeral service. Kimpodo explained, "We did not intend to mislead our customers, but we take this order very seriously and will thoroughly implement measures to ensure this does not happen again."
