National academic ability test: Elementary students struggle with ratios and cube volume

The Ministry of Education has released the analysis results of the Reiwa 8 (2026) National Assessment of Academic Ability. In particular, sixth-grade arithmetic showed challenges in understanding volume and ratios.

In the arithmetic section, a question asked for the formula to calculate the volume of a cube with 8 cm sides. The correct answer rate was only 72.9%. Common mistakes included “8×8” or “8×6,” showing that the basic idea of multiplying all three dimensions has not been fully established.

In ratio problems as well, a certain number of children do not correctly understand the whole-part relationship. The ministry hopes the results will help improve instruction, and schools need to carefully teach these concepts using concrete objects and diagrams.

The questionnaire survey also showed a trend of shorter study time outside school. The rate of sixth graders studying one hour or more on holidays fell to 39.4%, down 8.2 points. Increased smartphone use has also been pointed out as a factor.

The test is held every year to grasp students’ academic ability and improve education policies. Schools are expected to review teaching methods for volume and ratios and deepen understanding of basic concepts.
