Nobel Chemistry Prize winner Hideki Shirakawa dies at 90 — inventor of conductive plastics

Nobel Chemistry Prize winner and Professor Emeritus at the University of Tsukuba, Hideki Shirakawa, died in a hospital in Yokohama on August 24. He was 90 years old.

He is known for the invention of “conductive plastics.” Ordinary plastics do not conduct electricity, but the material he developed can. This research was recognized with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000.

Born in Tokyo in 1936, he spent his childhood in Taiwan and the former Manchuria. After graduating from Tokyo Institute of Technology, he continued his research and served as a professor at the University of Tsukuba. Conductive plastics are now used in various fields such as electronic devices and sensors.

According to his family, he had been hospitalized about a week before his death. The funeral was held only with family members. His achievements will continue to influence the world of science.
