Distinguishing は and が — new/old information, opposition, implementation
用法:情報の新旧
First appearance(new information)→ が; already mentioned, became a topic → は.
注意 / Note:The most basic principle. Beginning of story: 「ある観光地で若夫婦が旅館を経営していた」→ then use は.
比較 / Compare:が = new information(for the first time)/は = already known(has become a topic)— original principle.
よく出る形 / Common form:The opening sentence of the story uses が;from the second sentence it changes to は.
ある観光地で、若夫婦が旅館を経営していた。
At a tourist destination, there is a young couple running a motel business.(new)
夫は外交的な仕事、妻は宿泊客の世話をしていた。
The husband takes care of foreign affairs, the wife takes care of receiving guests.(know → は)
昔、一人の職人がいた。その職人は生涯独身だった。
Once upon a time there was a worker. That worker was single all his life.
