On 26 August 2026, a massive debris flow occurred near the Nepal-China border. It is believed to have been caused by the collapse of part of a glacier. On the Nepal side, more than 500 people have died and over 1,900 remain missing.

According to Japan’s Foreign Ministry, a Japanese family of five on a tour remains unaccounted for. All five share the surname Yamamoto. They are believed to have entered Nepal from the Chinese side on the 26th before contact was lost. Japan has sent staff to confirm their safety.

The cause is believed to be the collapse of part of a Himalayan glacier. A lake formed by debris blocking the river risks bursting, complicating rescue efforts. The Japanese government has sent staff to urgently confirm the safety of its citizens.

Frequently asked questions

What does 土石流 mean?

It is a mixed flow of rock, mud and water moving very quickly downhill. Usually occurs when glaciers or collapsed rocks block the river and then burst.

Why are there Japanese people missing?

A Japanese family of 5 (husband and wife and 3 children, last name Yamamoto) was on a tour, entering Nepal from China on August 26, when they lost contact immediately after the flash flood occurred.

What is the main cause of the disaster?

Part of the glacier in the Himalayan region collapsed, creating a huge flow of rock and mud flowing down the river, causing widespread flash floods in both Nepal and Tibet (China).
