Word games that use the same or similar sounds — like 「スキーが好きです」(ski / suki) or 「この肉、食べにくい」(niku / nikui) — are called dajare. Japanese has many words that sound the same but have different meanings, so it's easy to create dajare. Elementary school students and middle-aged people love dajare. However, when uncles speak, they are often looked at with cold eyes, because they are either bland or saying the same sentence over and over again.
Even so, dajare can be useful at times. Anyone can create it, and a good dajare can make others laugh and brighten the mood.
In addition, according to a brain researcher, if you regularly try to think of interesting dajare sentences, it also exercises the brain (note 1), and seems to help prevent confusion (note 2).
If a simple word game can relieve stress, make everyone laugh and have fun, and also exercise the brain, wouldn't that be great?
(note 1) 鍛える: repeated practice to make the body, mind or technique stable. (note 2) ボケ防止: prevents mental activity from deteriorating.
