接続：文。というのは、文。
The reason is; clearly state the meaning of the previous clause
注意 / Note：TWO ways to use: state the reason for the previous sentence, and explain the meaning of a word just said (〜というのは〜のことだ). Look at the last part ending in 〜からだ or 〜ことだ to distinguish.
比較 / Compare：Same song: なぜなら／というのも. These models are often mistakenly chosen for each other — carefully read the 接続 and nuances above and then decide.
よく出る形 / Common form：文。というのは、〜からだ（reason）／名詞＋というのは〜ことだ（definition）.
会議は延期です。というのは、部長が不在だからです。
The meeting was postponed because the department head was absent.
彼は欠席した。というのは、病気だったからだ。
They were absent because they were sick.
今年は参加を見送ります。というのは、日程が重なってしまったからです。
This year we would like to not participate. The reason is that the schedule overlapped.
